For the first class in this new series we will  begin with how to warm up each section of the spinal column through Yin Yoga postures that encourage the spine to extend.

Often I see dramatic postures in Yin Yoga classes offered early on in the sequence without any consideration for how the spine might be and how each practitioner will almost certainly have arrived with a differing degree of mobility in the spine depending what they have been doing during their day. Have they practiced yoga that day?  Have they been sitting at a desk for most of the day? What exercise, if any, have they done that day?

Just as we would warm up the body before a sports game or an exercise class, it is essential that we mobilise the spine gently before we try to extend it in yin yoga. Since the spine is made up of 5 continuous yet very different sections of the vertebral column: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral and coccygeal, it’s important that each section is targeted individually with its own applicable force of tension and compression.. Something we aren’t often used to hearing in yin yoga classes.

It’s still winter so shaking off that last bit of sluggishness and revitalising kidney qi should prove very beneficial during this upcoming practice on 27 Feb since kidney qi loves backbending.

I’m really excited about bringing an educated yet gentle and enjoyable practice to you each month which will tie in with the seasons, meridian energy, the main joints of the body in the spine, pelvis and neck and shoulder. Lots of practice time and time to connect at the end of class.
